The Hotel Metropole, which was built in 1873, was one of the most prestigious establishments in Vienna. Right after the “Anschluss” in March 1938, the National Socialists confiscated the building and turned it into the Gestapo headquarters. Several tens of thousands of individuals were filed in the building on the Morzinplatz between 1938 and 1945; they were arrested, interrogated, tortured, and committed to prisons and concentration camps. Subsequently, many of them were murdered.

In the frame of Into the City, a programmatic component of the festival Wiener Festwochen, a large number of artists examined the contaminated place this year. A selection of the realised artworks will be presented in two successive exhibitions at < rotor >. In addition to this, different educational modules are offered.

A project in cooperation by: Into the City & < rotor >
